We had the pleasure of attending the SS 2014 ThreeASFOUR runway show this past September. We have to say that this was our favorite show of the week! It was so perfect for us because the designs were so technologically influenced, featuring laser-cut & 3D printed designs. We have covered 3D printing in previous articles. Please see those HERE & HERE. Geometry, also a huge influence in this collection, was certainly seen throughout MBFW as we mentioned in these articles about Carolina Herrera & Yigal Azrouel.
ThreeASFOUR titled their latest project MER KA BA. Their description of the title & avant-garde concept is, “Merkaba is a mystical form of Judaism; ka ba alludes to the Kaaba, one of the holiest sites in Islam and the focal point of the Mecca pilgrimage…In ancient Egypt the hieroglyphs mer (rotating light), ka (spirit), and ba (body), placed together, describe the energy field through which the soul enters the body and ascends to higher planes.” This concept was demonstrated by the light projections on the ceiling during the show.
The 3D-printed textiles in the collection were made in collaboration with architect Bradley Rothenberg. (We actually had the pleasure of sitting next to Bradley’s parents during the show.) See more of his work HERE.
The runway show was held at the Jewish Museum (1109 5th Avenue). Fitting, since the museum will be presenting the collaboration as one of their exhibitions from September 15, 2013 – February 2, 2014. The museum will present an interactive performance combining avant-garde fashion & ancient bread-breaking rituals on November 10, 2013. Be sure to stop in to see it if you are in New York.
A few guests that we saw in attendance were Waris of House of Waris, Mickey and Kim from Paper Magazine, Sean Ono Lennon, and Marisa Tomei. The 21 look runway show was set up in three columns. Models donned red bob wigs & walked slowly to slightly haunting piano music.
