NFW Designer Spotlight – Abi Ferrin

Abi Ferrin

Abi, like most of us, started her life in one direction and ended up in a completely different one. Life has a funny way of molding us into who we are supposed to be.

Abi’s first steps in the ‘working’ world landed her in Washington DC where her broadcast journalism and international government  degrees were put to use working for NewsHour.
Three years later, she moved to Hollywood and began working with Paramount Pictures where she began designing garments to wear to industry parties. People took notice of her work, and a move to Dallas proved to be her solidifying transition to designing.

To quote her website, “In 2007 Abi Ferrin was named Texas’ Next Top Designer, a title that came with a pretty prize package which included placement of her product at Stanley Korshak, a trip to New York for fashion week where she took in all the major shows, $5,000 and a rent free loft to work out of for a year in the historic SouthSide on Lamar building in Dallas which is her boutique storefront to this day.”

Here are some highlight images from her spring 2013 lookbook.

Designer Q&A

1.  Tell us about yourself.

I have been the CEO of Abi Ferrin since I launched the brand 10 years ago.  I grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and after a few years in LA, where I launched my fashion brand, I moved operations to Dallas, Texas.  I love the outdoors, yoga, and all things fitness.  I share my home with my two rescue animals, a dog named Dalton and my kitten Zorra.  I was honored last year to be named one of Vogue’s 120, which is a group of 120 women across the country that Vogue names as leaders in fashion.

2. Where do you usually draw inspiration when creating your designs?

I draw inspiration from the current adventure I am leading in life, the women whom I design for and what I am missing from my personal wardrobe. Last season, I was scuba certified so my Spring/Summer 2013 collection is inspired by all things underwater.  For the Fall/Winter collection, I was inspired by the wingspan of an owl, and the Flapper Era of the 1920’s.

3.  Who are some of your favorite designers?

Alexander McQueen – then and now – I love the depth, technicality and creativity put into each piece.

Yves St. Laurent – the man was so unique and really expanded the possibilities for design by taking many risks in his work

Halston – I draw a lot of inspiration from vintage Halston for my current collection. It’s very free yet engineered approach to fashion.  The engineered part appears to just fit effortlessly, but nothing is effortless.

4.  Do you have a favorite magazine or blog that you follow regularly?

I love Vanity Fair as it has so many well written and interesting articles, and also a very strong fashion element. It is a great combination!  As any fashionista can attest, I am also a fan of Vogue to stay on top of what is coming next.

5.  We know you reside in Dallas, TX, so where is your favorite place to visit for either work or recreation?

For work I make at least a monthly trek to New York City, which is always a great place to visit and be inspired. While I love beach vacations, Aspen, Colorado also has a great mix of the outdoors and social life to make it a regular favorite.  My favorite leisure trip to date was to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Basically- I love to travel!

6.  If you could dress one ‘celebrity,’ who would it be?

Kate Middleton is our current ideal reflection of the brand, as she is so beautiful, real and impressive.  She recently acquired several of our pieces including our Cody pant, and was just seen wearing them in Arosa, Switzerland! I’d love to see more of our signature looks to, so we will keep on watching!
